In the Menabe region of Madagascar, a profound transformation towards sustainable agriculture is underway, led by the GP SAEP Program. This initiative, carried out by Action Intercoopération Madagascar (AIM) and the Forum des Conseils Agricoles (FCA), aims to empower farmers by equipping them with the knowledge and tools to adopt agroecological practices that benefit both their environment and livelihoods.
Strengthening Resilience through Needs-Based Agroecology
Between September and November 2024, several training sessions were organized for both local program staff and farmers, combining theory, practical application, and video resources from Access Agriculture.
These sessions addressed key topics such as:
-
Integrated Pest Management (IPM) – offering sustainable solutions for pest control while minimizing chemical pesticide use;
-
Soil preparation techniques tailored to rice cultivation;
-
The use of organic inputs like bio-herbicides, liquid compost, and green manure.
Bringing Hope to Menabe Through Agroecology
For many producers, these trainings have marked a turning point. After years of dependence on chemical-intensive agriculture, they are now discovering eco-friendly alternatives that promote healthier crops, restore soil fertility, and reduce environmental impact.
The program has also strengthened community engagement through the establishment of 60 Farmer Field Schools (FFS) across the region, each with a demonstration plot serving as a “living laboratory” for agroecological techniques.
In addition, video screenings from Access Agriculture have showcased real success stories, motivating farmers to adapt these innovative practices to their local context.
A Promising Path Toward Sustainable Agriculture
The GP SAEP Program is sparking a powerful shift in Menabe. By building the capacities of farmers, the program is:
-
encouraging agroecological adoption,
-
fostering community resilience,
-
and paving the way for a more sustainable food system.
By providing practical knowledge and fostering innovation, GP SAEP gives farmers the means and motivation to transform their agricultural practices and improve their future.
